President’s Message: November/December 2011

I wish you all a happy and safe Holiday Season.

Over the last year the Board of Directors has made several improvements for the Club by putting forward our best effort in every department to create opportunities for all of us.  Our latest venture was to obtain the new Tournament Players Program (TPP) software from the SCGA and purchase a laptop and printer to fully automate our tournaments.  The Tournament Committee is currently reducing the learning curve for the new software and you should see dramatic improvements in our tournament scoring.

Our Christmas Party will be held on Friday December 9th at the Mission Trails clubhouse and I would like to see all of you attend and enjoy the festivities. This party is always blast. The sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board.  Fliers are posted around the clubhouse and posted on our website.  For more information call me or anyone on our Board of Directors.

In the spirit of giving we will run 3 tournaments at Riverwalk: January 7th Chiefs, April 7th Chiefs and July 21st (5-club tournament) to give some support back to Riverwalk for hosting us early this year when our course was under construction. Green fees at Riverwalk will be $50.00 and we will get an optional $5.00 lunch special.

We will also have at least one social event in each quarter of next year, the Del Mar race day next July and a few other events and dates to be announced.  If you have any suggestions for a social event next year, please contact our social director Gary Boecker.

There is a new Greens Keeper at Mission Trails - Miguel “Mike” Estrada.  From what I’ve seen in the past month, the course has undergone significant improvements.  If you run into Mike on the course make a point of complementing him on his work to date in such a short span of time.

The deadline for membership renewals has been extended to December 4th.  Please make an effort to get your renewal in as soon as possible.  The renewal fee is once again $85.00.  Also, if you know anyone that wants to join the Club, encourage them to do it now so they can enjoy the full season with us. Ask the bartender for our information cards so you can hand them to prospective members.

Sincerely,

Mark Cerff,
President

AUGUST 2011

I am proud and pleased to announce that we have had a very successful year to date in all capacities of the Club - membership, tournaments , social, etc.
We have enjoyed a successful Classic Tournament which seemed to be the Club’s “Achilles Heel” in past years.  I believe the new format will grow into something special for the Club in future years. Thanks again for supporting and participating in the 2011 Classic and I’m sure you will spread the word so we can see greater participation next year.

If you remember, the switch blade divot repair tool you received in your ditty bag at the Classic tournament, this was a combined donation from two of our esteemed senior citizens and Board members Jim Pilling and Terry Kiely.  Please say a special “THANK YOU” when you see these elder statesmen as our one oversight was not to recognize them in our tournament program.

Coming up next week, Saturday August 13th, is our bus trip to Del Mar race track.  Wives and girlfriends are welcome. A sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board so HURRY this trip is a BLAST and will fill up fast as we have limited spots for only 45 people.  Call our Social Director Gary Boecker at (619) 787-0569 should you have any questions.

The end of next month will mark the end of our 2010 – 2011 Golf Season, which means after the Super Chiefs tournament on Sept. 24th, we will have the General Membership meeting followed by the election of our new Board of Directors for 2012.  Please come prepared to participate in the meeting as there are several issues concerning the General Membership, and also to vote for your pick of officers for the new Board.
Members interested in running for office or assisting the new Board in our various committee positions, a sign-up sheet is available on the bulletin board.  At this point the sheet is simply a sign-up sheet and not a ballet.  Names from interested members on this sheet will potentially be transferred to the formal ballet next month.

I want to thank the 2010 - 2011 Board of Directors for their outstanding effort and hard work through this year to make this past season a huge success and thoroughly enjoyable for all our members.

Sincerely,
Mark Cerff, President

FEBRUARY 2011

We have been playing our tournaments at Riverwalk for just over a month now and have experienced a large number of "NO SHOWS" which have forced us to apply a penalty policy as provided by our BY Laws.  By now, you have  read the bulletin and penalty warning I published.  I appeal to everyone to take this very seriously and only sign up for our tournaments if you fully intend to play.  DO NOT sign up other members without their consent and call our Tournament Chairman Rich Yager at 619.251.6231 or rich.yager@cox.net as early as possible if something comes up preventing you from playing.

The Board has been working hard on our Classic tournament, June 24th, 25th & 26th 2011.  This will be an "Open" tournament to anyone 18 years and older with a verifiable USGA index, including women.  We have revised this tournament completely to try and guarantee its success.  The "modified scramble format" is very equitable and fun for players of all handicaps.  If you do not unstand our "modified scramble format" contact our Tournament Chairman or anyone on the Board.  Please join me in promoting this event and making it THE signature event.
There will be incentives for members to bring in prizes, sponsorships and tee signs.  This incentive policy will be published shortly.  There will be banners advertising this event at the entrance to Mission Trails and on the range. Signup Applications and Letters of Solicitation for prizes are available at the Mission Trails pro shop, bar, from anyone on the Board or on our website.  Call or email me at the contact below if you need information, have any questions or would like to volunteer to help on our committee running this event.  I am expecting to fill the field of 144 players for the Classic and make it a memorable tournament for everyone involved.  This is THE signature event for our Club and we look forward to hosting it every year.

Sincerely,
Mark Cerff
President

DECEMBER 2010

As promised, the Christmas party was a huge success and everybody enjoyed the festivities. My compliments to everyone involved in putting this party together: the Social Committee, the wives for their gift baskets and decorations, and the staff of Mission Trails for their preparation and service.
We played our last tournament at Mission Trails for this year last Saturday Dec. 18th and will be playing at Riverwalk beginning in January 2011 through the end of March 2011.  I appeal to everyone to get signed up in time to allow the tournament committee enough time for co-ordination with Riverwalk.  Remember the deadline for sign-up is the Wednesday before Saturday’s play and all revisions or cancellations are to be communicated with Tournament Chairman Rich Yager in a timely manner at rich.yager@stantec.com or 619-251-6231.

PLEASE NOTE:

SIGN-UPS WILL STILL BE POSTED ON MISSION TRAILS BULLETIN BOARD OR YOU CAN CALL SOMEONE ON OUR TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE.  DO NOT CONTACT RIVERWALK TO SIGN UP FOR OUR TOURNAMENTS.

PLEASE CARRY YOUR CURRENT VALID SCGA HANDICAP CARD FOR MEMBERSHIP IDENTIFICATION AT RIVERWALK.

RIVERWALK HAS A STRICT GOLF DRESS CODE
NO JEANS ALLOWED.

We also have Saturday Team Play scheduled for next month and sign-ups are still open for both Thursday and Saturday teams.  Call team Captains Jim Southard and Greg Donaldson respectively if you wish to play on either team.

To generate income for our December Christmas party we have planned our first social event on November 14th, Champagne brunch at Cottonwood Golf Course with a putting tournament, best priced champagne brunch in San Diego.  This should be great fun so please sign up and bring your wives / girlfriends and invite your friends more information on this outing is on our website and bulletin board or call any Board member for information.  Join me in paying tribute to one of our current and longest standing members, Newell Bowen.I joined the Men’s Club in 1992 and in 1993 we had a large exodus of members who attempted to dissolve our Club by persuading the majority of members to break away and form a new men’s Club at Carlton Oaks.Newell Bowen took over as President in 1994 and was determined to salvage the Club and approached me to serve on the Board as Tournament Chairman. With the few remaining members we struggled to keep our Club a float, it was an uphill battle as some of you may recall from 1994 through 1996 the greens were replaced three times because of a fungus problem and nobody wanted to join our Club to play on dirt greens  at Mission Trails. We had 48 members in the Club and played Chief’s tournaments with as little as a total field of 12 participants all in one flight. Under Newell’s leadership we were determined to persevere, support and promote our Club, Newell’s philosophy was never to take away tournaments or functions we enjoyed in the past and regardless of the adversity we faced in those lean years we hosted and ran a successful Classic tournament. Next time you see Newell thank him and buy him a beer. The positive attitude and camaraderie that prevails in our Club today makes everyone feel welcome, promotes an enjoyable atmosphere and attracts new members.
A compliment to us all was a statement made to me by Cam Stevens (Regional Director for American Golf) “Of all the golf courses I oversee, Mission Trails has the best Men’s Club by far.”
I look forward to serving you all through the 2010/2011 season.
Sincerely,
Mark Cerff, (President)
